Breast Exams
A breast exam is an essential part of routine checkups for women. It is recommended that women get a breast exam every 1-3 years starting at age 20, and yearly after age 40. The best time to schedule an exam is soon after your period ends, since it is easier to check for changes when your breasts are not tender or swollen. During an exam, your physician examines the breasts for anything unusual, including lumps, rashes, dimpling, or redness. You can also learn how to do a self-exam at home.
Mammograms
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that allows doctors to check for early signs of breast cancer. This is the best available test for identifying breast cancer early, even before it can be felt or seen. Like a breast exam, it is best done after your period to avoid discomfort. The X-ray may cause some discomfort, but it takes only a few moments. It is best to get mammograms regularly since it will be easier to identify abnormalities by comparing your current scans to previous scans.
Pregnancy Test
Though at-home pregnancy tests are popular, they can also be done in a doctor’s office by a professional physician. Like off-the-shelf tests, pregnancy tests at Meridian Medical Group check for the chemical markers of pregnancy in blood and urine. Results are available immediately. Menopause
Menopause is when a woman stops menstruating. It typically occurs around age 45, though different women will experience it at different times. The most common symptoms are hot flashes and vaginal dryness, sometimes accompanied by mood swings and sleep disorders. Some women undergo menopause without major problems, but for women who experience severe symptoms or undergo menopause before age 40, treatments such as hormone replacement therapy are available to replace declining estrogen levels.
Thyroid Exam
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ that sits at the front of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. It secretes hormones that regulate many of your body’s basic functions, such as growth and development, metabolism, and body temperature. A thyroid exam involves a physician feeling your thyroid for any abnormal growths or swelling. An inflamed thyroid is called a goiter, which can be harmless or the precursor to a more serious thyroid problem.
Botox
Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an injectable medicine that smooths wrinkles between the eyebrows (frown lines) or around the eyes (crow’s feet). As we age and our skin becomes less flexible, repeated muscle movements such as frowning, smiling, or squinting lead to wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the underlying facial muscles. The effect wears off after several months, so Botox will need to be applied again to maintain the same appearance.

Eating excessive calories and lack of adequate exercise is generally accepted as the main reason for excessive weight gain. There are many other factors that influence one’s weight status apart from diet and exercise including genetics, age, sex, metabolic rate, and intestinal health. Lack of sleep and psychological stress issues can also affect weight.
In 1995, researchers discovered a hormone produced by fat cells called leptin. Leptin stimulates the center of the brain that that controls hunger and energy expenditure. Excessive weight gain results when leptin’s action is blocked.
